A Guide to the Beautiful Variety of French Bulldogs

One of the most exciting things about French Bulldogs is their incredible range of colors, coats, and patterns. At Frenchie Frenzy KC, we specialize in both Fluffy and Smooth Frenchies — in some of the rarest and most breathtaking color combinations you’ll ever see!

But beyond their good looks, each Frenchie carries a story in their DNA — a mix of color genes that make every puppy one of a kind. Let’s explore the unique shades and coat types that make Frenchies so special.

🐾 Fluffy vs. Smooth Coats

The Fluffy Frenchie carries one or two copies of the long-hair gene (L1/L4). Their coats are soft, full, and plush — like tiny teddy bears! These Frenchies are extremely popular for their rare look and luxurious texture.

Smooth Coats, on the other hand, are the classic French Bulldog style — sleek, shiny, and low-maintenance. Whether fluffy or smooth, both coat types have the same lovable personalities Frenchies are famous for!

🎨 Common & Rare Frenchie Colors

Frenchies come in a rainbow of shades — some traditional, others rare and highly sought after.

Here are a few we love at Frenchie Frenzy KC:

  • Blue: A soft steel-gray coat that gives off a luxurious shine.

  • Lilac: A mix of blue and chocolate genes — elegant and dreamy.

  • Chocolate: Deep, rich brown tones that are absolutely stunning.

  • Merle: A marbled mix of color and pattern, creating a one-of-a-kind look every time.

  • Harlequin Merle: A rare variation of merle, with striking light and dark patches — truly show-stopping!

  • Rojo (Red Cocoa): A warm reddish-brown hue that turns heads everywhere.

  • Tan Points: Cute “eyebrow” markings and highlights around the chest, legs, and face.

  • Pied: Gorgeous patches of color on a white base coat — classic and playful.

Each color combination is unique, and many of our puppies carry multiple genes that make them extra special!

🧬 The Role of Genetics

We use color DNA testing to understand what genes each parent carries, helping us plan pairings carefully and ethically.
Every color comes from a specific gene combination — for example:

  • Blue: d/d (blue dilution gene)

  • Lilac: d/d and b/b (blue + chocolate)

  • Cocoa: co/co

  • Fluffy Coats: L1 or L4

  • Pied Pattern: n/S

By knowing these markers, we can confidently predict coat type and color while keeping health and structure our top priority.

💖 Beauty Beyond Color

While rare colors and patterns are exciting, our focus always remains on health, structure, and temperament. A pretty coat is only part of what makes a Frenchie special — what truly matters is the loving, well-socialized puppy beneath it.

At Frenchie Frenzy KC, every Frenchie — no matter the color — is raised with faith, family, and lots of love.

✝️ Guided by Faith and Integrity

We believe God’s creativity shines through the incredible diversity of this breed. Each puppy is beautifully made, inside and out. Whether you fall in love with a Fluffy Merle or a Smooth Lilac, your Frenchie will always be one of a kind — a true blessing from nose to tail.
